Feature Stories: Polio, Sierra Leone
During the war in Sierra Leone a group of 120 youth disabled by polio and a few orphans fled the fighting traveling through dense rainforest to reach the capital, Freetown. On arrival in the capital, they were put into a camp for internally displaced people (IDP) at the sports stadium. Because of their disabilities, the stadium proved to be difficult for them to live in and so they moved into an empty house in the city centre. The NGOs and other UN agencies no longer assisted them as they left the official IDP camp. These images were taken over a period of a few days and show their daily life.
